Manchester United are in desperate need of centre-backs.

With Jonny Evans and Phil Jones constant injury concerns, Chris Smalling failing to live up to his potential and Tyler Blackett way too raw at this stage, Louis van Gaal has a severely soft centre, despite the attacking options at his disposal.

Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao may have scored three at Leicester, but a defence that is torn to shreds by Jamie Vardy, Leonardo Ulloa and David Nugent is going to struggle to challenge for the Champions League places, let alone the Premier League title.

Former United defender Phil Neville said Old Trafford chiefs need to spend another £100m to be in with a chance of winning the division and while Louis van Gaal sees Michael Carrick as a short term solution, United are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements if they are to finish in the top four.

While talk of sensational bids for world class centre-backs like Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid will encourage fans, it is difficult to pull off such moves.

Here are some more realistic, Premier League proven options that would improve a shaky United defence and won't break the bank.
