Luis Suarez has confirmed he wishes to leave Liverpool this summer, blaming the British press for making him “feel uncomfortable”.

The Uruguay international is widely expected to join Real Madrid, with a figure of around £40m put on the proposed deal.

Should Suarez get his wish, Liverpool will be left with a huge gaping hole in their attack. The 26-year-old has just enjoyed his best season at Anfield since joining from Ajax in 2011, contributing 23 goals in the Premier League.

So how might Liverpool fill the void? Here, we take a look at the potential candidates...

David Villa

The Spain striker has seemingly been on his way out of Barcelona for the past year, and with the arrival of Neymar at the Nou Camp, it appears the 31-year-old could finally be off. His tenacious style and global reputation make him a good option.

Loic Remy

Following QPR's relegation from the Premier League, there seems little doubt Remy will move on, despite only joining the club in January. In his short time in the Premier League, the Frenchman managed to make his price-tag of £8m look a snip, scoring six goals in 13 appearances.

Andy Carroll

It seems unlikely that Carroll will be welcomed back at Anfield after being sent out on loan for the season at West Ham. Brendan Rodgers is clearly not a fan and the England striker would not exactly provide a like-for-like replacement. Yet in the final couple of months of the season Carroll provided a glimmer of the talent that saw Liverpool pay Newcastle £35m for him. The Reds will need a goalscorer next season and may not be in a position to be overly fussy.

Gonzalo Higuain

Should Suarez get his move to Real Madrid, Liverpool might want to enquire about a possible swap deal involving Higuain. The Spanish giants revealed earlier this year that the Argentina international would be allowed to leave this summer and the 25-year-old's fine record at the Bernabeu suggests he could prove a hit in the Premier League.

Edin Dzeko

There has been a lot of speculation that Dzeko will move on from Manchester City this summer after growing frustrated by his lack of starts at the Etihad. Should Liverpool claw in £40m for their unsettled striker, they'll have the funds to splash out on the Bosnian who has scored only eight less Premier League goals than Suarez since moving to the Premier League at the same time.

Out of their reach...

This summer the futures of a huge number of the world's best strikers are in doubt. Wayne Rooney, Robert Lewandowski, Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovich to name just a few. But the absence of Champions League football at Anfield next season means Liverpool will be unlikely to attract players of their calibre.
