Croatia World Cup profile

Croatia come into the knockout stage of the World Cup undefeated and knowing that their half of the draw has opened up massively by Spain's shock elimination. Their impressive showing in the group stage saw them easily pick apart Argentina while they enjoyed commanding wins over Nigeria and Iceland.

Impressive defensive showings from the side meant that they only conceded one goal during the group stage of the competition, which came against Iceland in the form of a penalty.

Denmark have been less impressive, getting through to the knockout stage with just two goals under their belt. Their mediocre showing against Australia mean that they had to perform against France or they ran the risk of not qualifying. They were helped out massively by Peru’s surprise win over Australia that meant that their 0-0 draw against France was enough for them to take second in Group C.

Prediction

Denmark face an almighty challenge in getting past Croatia. Zlatko Dalić’s side have been one of the tournament’s more consistent teams and are likely to take it up a notch in the knockout stages. It’s hard to see this game ending in anything but a Croatia win.

Fancy some pre-match reading? Our reporter in Russia, Jack Pitt-Brooke takes a look at two of the brightest stars in this one - Christian Eriksen and Luka Modric

Christian Eriksen and Luka Modric may be the biggest stars, but the game may be defined by the rest of the teams.

For Croatia the likes of Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic will be crucial, with the much improved Dejan Lovren at the heart of defence.

For Denmark Kasper Schmeichel is likely to be the busier goalkeeper, whilst it will also be a big evening for Chelsea youngster Andreas Christensen in defence, and Yussuf Poulsen will need to shoulder the burden of creativity.

ICYMI: Game one of the day and Spain are knocked out by the hosts Russia on penalties. That leaves this section of the draw wide open, and potentially makes this match even more important, with either team having a huge chance to reach the business end of this tournament.

Although not a clear favourite going into the tournament, Croatia were seen as an underdog, and now will feel as though they have a chance of progression with the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic within their ranks.

Denmark have quality on the bench too, in the form of tricky winger Pione Sisto. Will he be needed, and are we headed for another game that goes right to the wire?

We'll find out soon enough as the anthems are well underway, with five minutes until kick off

2 mins: GOAL! Croatia 0-1 Denmark (Mathias Jorgensen)

I hope you hadn't popped out for a cuppa before the game...Knudsen fires a looping long throw into the penalty area and Mathias Jorgensen bundles it home. Subasic should do better in goal for Croatia, but a crazy start again here.
