Betting markets down 50 per cent compared to previous fights

Boxing fans are 'tired' of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, at least according to bookies.

Mayweather improved to 47-0 on Saturday night to retain his WBC welterweight title in the rematch against Marcos Maidana, in a performance that was largely forgettable and one in which Mayweather himself admitted his performance had been no better than a "C, C minus".

The Money man earned at least $32million for his win but ESPN said that markets on the fight were down 50 per cent compared to his fight with Canelo Alvarez in 2013.

With Mayweather a 1/6 favourite for the bout with Maidana many punters were put off of betting on him or on an upset.

William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich told ESPN:“No big bets; no accumulation of small bets on the underdog. No interest. Floyd’s not the most popular guy.

“His fights aren’t really exciting. People are tired of it.”

In his previous fights Mayweather has attracted massive bets with six figures common and even the occasional million dollar bet.

Mayweather, 37, has announced his decision to retire from the sport this time next year after the end of his HBO/Showtime deal.

He will fight twice, likely to be in May and in September, with Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Kell Brook talked about as possible opponents.
