Michael van Gerwen has talked about his desire to turn his "focus on the oche" following allegations of exchanging intimate messages.

The recently married darts player was reported to have sent texts to Stacey Owens whilst playing at a tournament in the UK.

The Dutchman has since released a statement acknowledging messages were sent but denies there was "any physical relationship" involved.

"I deeply regret my decision to exchange messages with Stacey Owen and my decision to meet her whilst I was already in the UK to play in the premier league," said a statement tweeted by the 2014 PDC world champion.

It continued: "I wish to make clear that there has never been any physical relationship between Ms Owen and myself.

"My primary concern is for my family and my wife Daphne, who I apologise to unreservedly. My hope is that people will now allow me to move forward and focus on my performances on the oche."

Van Gerwen married long-time girlfriend Daphne Govers in August last year.
