Elise Christie became Great Britain's first short-track speed skating World Cup champion at 1,000m in Sochi, Russia today.

The 22-year-old, from Livingstone, had already won a silver medal in the 1,000m to guarantee her No 1 ranking overall, meaning she cannot be caught in the standings with only one World Cup race remaining, in Germany. Christie achieved her World Cup standing for the 1,000m with five podium finishes and one victory, in Japan in December. She had previously competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics, finishing 11th in the 500m, 19th in the 1000m and 20th in the 1500m.

British men's relay quartet of Jon Eley, Paul Stanley, Jack Whelbourne and Richard Shoebridge suffered disappointment. After progressing to the four-team final, they seemed destined for a medal place after going well but a crash just six laps from the finish of the 5,000m race left them fourth; Russia took line honours ahead of Holland and Canada.

Korea's Shim Suk Hee maintained her overall World Cup 1,500m lead by taking gold at the 2014 Winter Olympic venue.
