The Good: Murray's year to shine?

Andy Murray shone to claim the Brisbane International title, sparking hope that 2012 could be the year for our favourite Scot. Murray has a new coach, Ivan Lendl, to advise him and both are on the same wave length. "He has a similar sense of humour to me," Murray told Sportsweek. "And he's very hard working." The folorn form of chief rivals also bodes well. Rafa Nadal was knocked out of the Qatar Open at the semi-final hurdle, while Roger Federer is suffering from a back injury. Lendl will hope Murray has the backbone to prevail at next week's Australian Open.

The Bad: Rovers struggle to cope

Blackburn Rovers may be struggling to keep afloat in the Premier League, but spare a thought for Bristol Rovers who are in danger of sinking into the abyss. Their FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa means they have lost five consecutive games and sit just two points clear of the League Two drop zone. Indeed instability reigns after Paul Buckle was sacked last week. Fans will hope they won't be mourning the loss of their league status at the Memorial Stadium come May.

The Odd: Crazy Di Canio

One of football's most enigmatic characters continues to entertain and bewilder in equal measure. Paolo Di Canio was embroiled in a tunnel bust-up with his own striker, Leon Clarke, last summer, and on Saturday he called on the Swindon hierarchy to honour his players after they beat Wigan. "I don't want a big statue," said Di Canio. "Just a small plaque with all ther names because they did something special."
