The Good: Wins a boon for Britain

How about that for a glorious sporting weekend for Great Britain, with three oustings of world champions? Everybody expected a Spanish inquisition at Wembley, no one expected a belligerent England to prevail 1-0. There was even a thrilling performance from England's rugby league side, with victory at the KC Stadium over New Zealand taking them through to the Four Nations final. And after all his ignominy, Lewis Hamilton tasted sweet victory in the Abu Dhabi GP, taking only his third win of the season after Sebastien Vettel retired. Long may the British winning streak continue into Olympic year...

The Bad: Thorpe's sinking feeling

Sheer determination brought Ian Thorpe five Olympic golds, but his resolution to return to the pool after five years is so far proving a disastrous move. He finished 26th in heats for the 100m butterfly at the Tokyo World Cup meeting yesterday, after failing to reach the 100m freestyle final on Saturday. At least he knew his quest for London 2012 success could prove one length too far, conceding this month about his return: "Chances are you are probably going to fail at this."

The Odd: Blast from the past

A feeling of nostalgia gripped Event City in Manchester on Saturday night. With "Simply the Best" booming around the arena pre-fight, Chris Eubank Jnr beat Lithuania's Kirilas Psonko to make a superb start to his professional boxing career, evoking memories of his father, the former two-weight world champion. Funny how life works. Perhaps we'll see a Tyson Jnr throwing his weight around in a ring in a decade's time to take after Mike.
