Italy's Dario Cataldo took a solo summit finish victory on stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday as Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez finished third on the stage to retain the overall lead. Cataldo dropped breakaway companion Thomas De Gendt of Belgium with 2km to go for victory on the summit of Cuitu Negru in Asturias.

Rodriguez fended off several attacks by Alberto Contador to maintain his overall lead, 28 seconds ahead of Contador with Alejandro Valverde in third more than two minutes behind. Britain's Chris Froome remains in fourth place.

The Vuelta a Espana finishes on Sunday in Madrid.
