Ben Hellewell’s second try gave Scotland a creditable and possibly crucial 30-30 draw against Italy on Sunday in another blockbuster World Cup encounter at Workington.

Five days earlier, the Scots had edged out Tonga 26-24 and they were given another stern test by Group C rivals Italy, who were looking to make it a hat-trick of wins against British opposition after beating England in a friendly and Wales in their World Cup opener.

Inspired by Danny Brough, Steve McCormack’s Scots took a 14-0 lead and kept their noses in front until the hour, but they looked increasingly jaded as Italy moved into a 30-26 lead. However, the Azzurri were hit on the break and Hellewell grounded in the corner to earn a deserved point that keeps alive Scots hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
