In recent meetings it has been almost impossible to separate these two sides, but Hull cantered past Wakefield into the next round of the Powergen Challenge Cup yesterday.

John Kear's teamscored seven tries in all, with Wakefield looking a shadow of the side who beat Leeds a week ago.

Hull opened the scoring in the third minute when Kirk Yeaman sent Gareth Raynor over in the corner. Then, when Jamie Rooney was sent to the sin-bin for deliberate offside, Hull extended their lead to 16 points.

First, excellent handling from Stephen Kearney and Richard Whiting sent Shayne McMenemy over. Two minutes later, after Richard Horne had sliced through, Shaun Briscoe was on hand to cruise under the posts. Danny Brough added the extras on both occasions. Yeaman increased the lead to 20 points as Cooke sent him over in the corner.

The home side scored with their first real attack as Colum Halpenny crossed in the corner. Jamie Rooney added a superb touchline goal. Just before the hour Jamie Thackray barged over for Hull, but when Steve Snitch crossed for Wakefield with 12 minutes remaining and Rooney goaled, the game was nicely poised at 24-12.

But Motu Tony soon ran 20 metres from dummy half to score. Cooke added the goal and did so again with two minutes left, after Briscoe's second try.
