One silver and seven bronzes from the British squad at the German Open in Bonn at the weekend will settle many of the problems facing selectors for the World Championships in Munich on 26-29 July.

Yesterday the London featherweight Jim Warren forged ahead of Scotland's David Somerville by taking a silver, and only just missing out on gold he was winning until he was thrown in the last 10 seconds. The world light-middleweight champion Graeme Randall secured his chance to defend the title by beating his main domestic rival Luke Preston in the final with a five-point throw one of his best performances of the year.

The other surprise of the weekend was the ascendancy of the bantamweight Sam Dunkely. He took a bronze on Saturday while his main British rival, John Buchanan, did not reach a medal position. Lee Burbridge emerged top of the three British players in the Under-73kg category and Winston Gordon, in the Under-90kg, also finished ahead of Peter Cousins and Steve Vidler.

In the women's event, the featherweight Georgina Singleton confirmed her leading status with a bronze, as did the light-middleweight Karen Roberts, the light-heavyweight Michelle Rogers and the heavyweight Karina Bryant. "These results will play their part in our selection, but the world team will only be announced on Friday, after the international training camp," the UK élite performance director, Udo Quellmalz, said.
