The last WWE pay-per-view of 2017 saw AJ Styles stand tall after retaining the WWE Championship against Jinder Mahal on a night full of talking points.

Styles was able to cement his historic WWE Championship reign that began on these shores in Manchester back in November as he overturned Mahal and, of course, the Singh Brothers as well. Mahal was as game as ever, but Styles looks to have finally put his challenge to bed as he looks towards January’s Royal Rumble.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn continue to have the upper hand on Shane McMahon after refereeing controversy saw the duo pick up a contentious win over Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura.

AJ Styles retained the WWE Championship

Zayn looked to have won the match for his team before McMahon – one of two special referees for the contest – stopped his count short. That lead to tensions between McMahon and Daniel Bryan, the other official, who then delivered a fast count to ensure it was the Canadians who emerged victorious, saving their jobs in the process.

The night had opened with a triple threat match for the United States Championship, Dolph Ziggler stealing one by taking the crown from Baron Corbin with Bobby Roode also in the mix. Ziggler was a late addition to the bout, leaving Corbin furious as he vowed to get revenge in regaining the gold.

McMahon and Bryan were left arguing in the ring

There was chaos in both the Smackdown Women’s and Tag divisions at the event. Charlotte Flair and the Usos respectively managed to keep hold of their titles with bodies flying here, there and everywhere. Flair downed Natalya with the sharpshooter in a lumberjack match while the Usos bested three of the show’s best tag teams to ensure they stay at the top of the tag division on Smackdown’s blue brand.

The Bludgeon Brothers look like they’re well on their way to challenging for the tag championships after they swept aside Breezango in decisive fashion, while Mojo Rawley left former partner Zack Ryder in his wake thanks to a win on the kick-off show.
