The show kicked off with The Rhodes Brothers taking on The Usos in a tag-team match with a shot at the WWE Tag Team Championships on offer if Cody Rhodes and Goldust win. Cody hit the disaster kick on Jimmy and went for the pin but Jey just about made the save. Jimmy followed up with a hard-hitting superkick then a splash from the top rope for the win. The twins celebrated by dancing in the ring while Cody ranted at the commentators about the loss and stormed off without his brother. WWE have revisited the teasing of a breakup between the two siblings following a series of defeats in the tag-team division.

Last Man Standing

John Cena entered the ring next to a thunderous ovation from the North Carolina crowd. Cena started off by wishing Daniel Bryan a speedy recovery following his neck surgery that will see him out of action for a few months. John Cena then addressed Bray Wyatt’s cryptic messages about a Last Man Standing Match and that Bray shouldn’t want that type of match because he’s never been in one yet Cena has been through many. Cena continued to state that Bray doesn’t have any brains and accepted his challenge for a rematch at Payback.

The Wyatt Family appeared on the big screen as Bray said that he walks inside monsters and he sings with spirits. He continued that he could be the most dangerous man in the world but thankfully the world came begging to me for mercy. Bray then thanked Cena for helping him find the cure that will take the air from Cena’s lungs. Bray stated that tonight one of them will be left standing to lead the world into tomorrow before singing “He’s got the whole world in his hands.”

The in-ring actioned got back underway with El Torito taking on Heath slater in a singles match. El Torito was accompanied by Los Matatores who threw a red cape to Slater for him to hold in confusion. The red cape instigated Torito to gore slater, which enabled a parody of a bullfight to start between the two. Slater slammed Torito to the mat to pose above the luchadore like he had won the match. Torito then tried to spear the 3MB member, which caused Hornswoggle to run in but inadvertently hit his companion. Torito took advantage with a slingshot moonsault to yet again get the better of Heath Slater and 3MB.

Natalya faced Nikki Bella with Eva Marie as the special guest referee as the competitors continue their rivalry that stemmed from Nikki hating Natalya’s artwork. Nikki hit Natalya with a facebuster but Eva only counted for two as the match continued on. Nikki then missed a clothesline for Natayla to counter with a bodyslam followed by a bridge submission. Nikki pulled back for a pin with both shoulders flat on the mat, Eva didn’t make a count while both shoulders were down and only counted when Nikki readjusted herself. Nikki got the win in a messy finish due to poor refereeing by Eva Marie, causing frustration on the face of Natalya.

The Animal Unleashes

Batista faced Dolph Ziggler to continue his run of wins on Smackdown heading into Payback where Evolution has a rematch with The Shield. The bearded “Animal” showed intent with a series of attacks causing near falls before landing the spinebuster. Batista shook the ropes and gave the thumbs down to signal the Batista Bomb but Ziggler reversed the grapple into a DDT. Batista then ran towards Ziggler in the corner but the “Show Off” dodged and followed with a corner splash. The match ended with Batista bailing out with a low blow to give Ziggler the win by disqualification. An irate Batista didn’t let Ziggler celebrate as he hit the winner with a Batista Bomb before throwing him out for another powerbomb onto the barricade. Batista may not have gotten the win but he looked strong ahead of the showdown at Payback.

Sheamus’ match against Titus O’Neill was preceded by a promo by Titus where slammed the “Celtic Warrior” for not being from the United States despite being US Champion. Titus then said he will give the Irishman a chance to leave “his” ring but Sheamus refused to do so. The match ended in an instant with a straight Brogue Kick for the three count. Sheamus stood strong with his championship and smiled at the fans whilst the JBL and Michael Cole laughed at the diminishing of Titus.

Damien Sandow issued an open challenge to anyone in the WWE locker room, which was met by Santino Marella who was accompanied Emma. The match ended in only thirty seconds as Santino’s beatdown failed due to Santino hitting his Cobra finisher early on for the win. Santino then went to rant at the fans but his microphone turned off, continuing the trend where he keeps getting cut off during his speeches.

Paul Heyman cut a promo on R-Truth next where he told him that he can’t handle the truth that his client Brock Lesnar conquered the streak at WrestleMania. He then introduced Truth’s opponent, the “Swiss Superman” and “The King of Swing” Cesaro. Cesaro went for the attack as soon as the bell rang and went for a vicious Swiss uppercut early on followed by the Neutraliser to get the win in under a minute. Cesaro gloated with his manager as the two continue their massive winning streak since WrestleMania.

The Wyatts Fall

John Cena was joined by The Usos to take on the Wyatt Family in a six-man tag team match to main event the show. The match’s momentum got underway when Cena hit the Five-Knuckle Shuffle on Erick Rowan before attempting the Attitude Adjustment, which the powerhouse was able to reverse out of. Rowan went for a counter but Cena hit a drop toe hold to set up the STF, which was saved by Luke Harper. The Usos then entered the ring to clear out Harper followed by a suicide dive, which enabled Cena to hit the AA on Rowan in the ring. Bray tried to run in for the save but the Usos blocked the win for Cena to get the pin and the victory.

The Usos got a double victory tonight and Cena has managed to finally get the upper hand on the Wyatts since his loss at Extreme Rules. Bray will definitely be seeking to regain momentum at Raw in London on Monday night but tonight’s win will give Cena all the bragging rights ahead of their Last Man Standing Match at Payback. Cena has excelled in this type of match over the last decade and won’t be an easy pushover for the malicious Wyatt.
