Lee Westwood has taken on Australian Mike Waite – known as "Sponge" – as his stand-in caddie while Billy Foster recovers from the knee injury suffered in a football kickabout two weeks ago.

With Foster out for up to six months, England's world No 3 used American Cayce Kerr over the last two weeks but will start working with Waite in next week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Waite is best known for his long partnership with New Zealander Michael Campbell, which included his US Open triumph in 2005.

Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia against Spanish compatriot Alvaro Quiros and Justin Rose against English countryman Robert Rock will be two of the group clashes in this week's Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesin near Marbella.

In a change from last year, only the best-ranked 16 players in the 24-strong field have been seeded for the group stage, while the remaining eight players will go into a draw to join them tomorrow. Defending champion Ian Poulter will have Australian John Senden in his group. The top-ranked player is world No 9 Martin Kaymer and he will meet Rafael Cabrera-Bello. The format sees eight groups of three, with the leading two players in each after the round-robin games going through to the knockout phase.

Scotland's Martin Laird has climbed eight places to 31st in the world rankings. The Glaswegian, 29, finished tied for second at the Players Championship at Sawgrass at the weekend.
