When is it?

The men’s 5,000m will be held on Saturday 20 August 2016.

What time will it be on?

The race will start at around 1.30am Sunday 21 August BST (9.30pm local time in Rio).

Where can I watch it live?

BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, the BBC red button and the BBC Sport website will have live coverage of all events at Rio 2016.

Who are the contenders?

Team GB’s Mo Farah is the bookies’ favourite to win again this year, despite him admitting that winning gold again this year will be much harder than in London in 2012.

Keep an eye out also for Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremesekel, who lost to Farah by just 0.32 seconds last time round.

Remember when…

Mo Farah’s incredible home-team win at London 2012 was a defining moment of the Games for Team GB, with footage of his exhausted, overwhelming joy as he passed the finish line played in slow-motion in a hundred highlight reels.

What’s the world record?

12:37.35 – Kenenisa Bekele (ETH), 31 May 2004
