The African hospitality centre for the Olympics has closed, it was confirmed today.

Africa Village, in Kensington Gardens, west London, was hosting regular music concerts and African medallists were visiting to share their triumphs with fans.

It was one of a host of hospitality sites around London set up for various countries during the Games.

It has closed due to mounting debts owed to suppliers, according to the BBC.

The site, located near the Royal Albert Hall, hosted athletes, officials and the Association of National Olympic Committees for Africa (Anoca).

It had exhibition stalls and a private area for accredited guests.

A spokeswoman for London and Partners said the village has closed due to "logistical problems".

She said: "As the city's official tourism body and convention bureau, we have been working closely with all the NOCs (National Olympic Committees) coming in to the city, which includes the African NOC behind Africa Village.

"Our work both before and during the Games has been to ensure that all Olympic NOC houses are safe and enjoyable experiences for all visitors.

"Sadly, due to logistical problems, Africa Village has had to close early. We have been working closely with all the teams involved and with the Royal Parks and we will continue to support and offer advice where we can."

A statement on the village's website read: "Africa Village temporarily closed until further notice. Sorry."
