Gymnastics: Gabrielle Douglas lands glory but it's zero for Whelan

Great Britain's Rebecca Tunney could only manage in 13th place in the individual all-around yesterday with Hannah, Whelan's hopes of a top 10 finish crumbling after she was awarded zero points on the vault for landing on her knees to end in last place.

American Gabrielle Douglas won the gold with Russians Viktoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina taking silver bronze respectively.

Douglas was locked in a head-to-head battle with Komova but she edged her opponent into silver medal position with a total of 62.232.

Tunney impressed in her first full senior year of competition, but Whelan's hopes of improving on her ninth place at last year's World Championships ended on the vault. The 20-year-old was distraught and had to be consoled by her coach after the judges concluded she did not land on her feet first and had therefore not completed her vault.

Douglas, who posted the highest all-around title in the team final, where the United States won gold, produced a fantastic floor performance to claim her second gold of the Games with a crowd-pleasing 15.033 routine.

It was enough to claim the title ahead of Komova, the last gymnast to compete.
