Great Britain's London 2012 campaign ended with a fifth successive defeat as Montenegro breezed past the hosts tonight.

The men's water polo team were playing for pride against the Balkan nation, having already been confirmed as Group B's bottom team.

Montenegro, however, were after a win which would secure second place in a preliminary group dubbed the Group of Death.

Great Britain went three goals down in the opening quarter, before centre-forward Adam Scholefield scored from in front of goal.

Montenegro fired home one more before the end of the period to take the score to 4-1 at the first break.

Team GB leaked two more in the opening minutes of the second period, but Glen Robinson converted a man-up opportunity to claim the hosts' second goal of the match.

In a frantic spell of scoring in the dying minutes of the first half, Montenegro scored with a long-range effort, before Rob Parker clawed one back for Great Britain.

The Balkan side added one more to their tally before half-time, taking the score to 8-3 at the break.

A tighter third period saw Great Britain fail to take advantage of extra-player chances, while Montenegro rattled the woodwork.

Team GB captain Craig Figes scored the quarter's first, but Montenegro responded shortly after by firing in a penalty.

The eventual winners scored again before the end of the period by lobbing into the top corner to take their tally into double-figures.

Montenegro pushed on in the fourth period to fire three unanswered goals past Great Britain.

Aleksandar Radovic and Boris Zlokovic scored hat-tricks for Montenegro, while Mladan Janovic and Aleksandar Ivovic netted a brace each.

Nikola Janovic, Vladimir Gojkovic and Predrag Jokic scored one apiece.
