Tiger Roll secured a famous victory in the 2018 Grand National, holding off a late charge from Pleasant Company to take the spoils in a photo-finish.

The combination of jockey Davy Russell and Tiger Roll gave trainer Gordon Elliott his second Grand National winner after his 2007 triumph with Silver Birch, and comes just two weeks after winning the Irish Grand National.

Long-time leader Ucello Conti unseated its rider at the 28th fence, having dropped away from the lead, and despite rallying after being passed by the eventual winner, Pleasant Company and jockey David Mullins – son of trainer Willie – were unable to pinch the victory on the line.

Only 12 horses managed to finish the gruelling race, which saw 38 start with hopes of claiming the world’s most famous steeplechase event, and all but one horse returned to the stables unharmed, with Saint Are needing treatment after a fall at the 15th.

All 38 jockeys also returned to the paddock, although Charlie Deutsch was taken to the medical centre after falling off Houblon Des Obeaux at the sixth.
