Toulouse have one foot in the Champions Cup quarter-finals after an edgy 12-9 Pool Four win over Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun.

Four penalties by scrum-half Sebastien Bézy were enough to edge a tryless match that yielded a fourth successive pool victory for the four-time champions. With Toulouse holding a six-point lead with two rounds remaining, Glasgow and Bath are realistically now chasing a runners-up place.

The Warriors were left to rue some errant goal-kicking by Finn Russell, Duncan Weir’s two late penalties proving insufficient.

Challenge Cup

French scalp extends Chiefs’ unbeaten run

Exeter Chiefs recorded an eighth straight win in all competitions as they crushed La Rochelle 41-17 at Sandy Park. Skipper Kai Horstmann set the ball rolling with a first-minute try in the Challenge Cup tie and the Chiefs wrapped up the bonus point by the 33rd minute through Greg Bateman, Fetu’u Vainikolo and a penalty try.

Tom James and Adam Hughes also crossed as Exeter cemented their spot at the top of Pool Two.

Gloucester and Irish both hit the top

Gloucester lead Challenge Cup Pool Five after securing a 32-16 bonus-point win over Zebre in Italy.

Their task was eased by the red card shown to David Otiete on half-time for a dangerous tackle on Stevie McColl. McColl, Henry Purdy, Charlie Sharples and Ben Morgan scored Gloucester’s tries.

London Irish ended a six-match losing streak by toppling Cardiff Blues 34-23 at Reading.

Irish wing Andrew Fenby scored a try in each half whilst fly-half Shane Geraghty also touched down after charging down Gareth Anscombe’s kick. The Exiles now lead Pool One on points difference.

Sevens World Series

Blitzbokke await after England slip up
