Luther Burrell, the Northampton centre at the heart of a selection rumpus after missing the final England cut for last year’s World Cup, was back in red-rose training today after a summons from Eddie Jones. Burrell failed to make the head coach’s original squad for the Six Nations, but he replaces the Bath midfielder Ollie Devoto, who was concussed while on Premiership duty against Wasps at the weekend.

If Jones reverts to a five-three split between forwards and backs on the bench for this Saturday’s meeting with Ireland at Twickenham, there is a chance of Burrell beating Elliot Daly of Wasps and Sam Hill of Exeter to a place in the match-day party.

All the usual suspects gathered at the team base in Surrey, with the exception of the uncapped Josh Beaumont. The Sale No 8, son of the Rugby Football Union chairman Bill, dislocated a shoulder during his club’s defeat at Sale on Saturday.
