The former Wales captain Jonathan Davies says taking Jonny Wilkinson on the British and Irish Lions tour would have been a "backward step".

Wilkinson, 33, was offered a place on the tour of Australia by coach Warren Gatland but the veteran fly-half wanted to concentrate on playing for Toulon.

"I don't think his game management is that great," Davies said. "He also does not bring centres into the game. They will come and they will score tries against us. I think we'll have to score tries against them and I don't think that Jonny Wilkinson is that man."

Gatland's only specialist fly-halves on the tour will be Ireland's Jonny Sexton and England's Owen Farrell.
