Nick Mallett has thrown his hat into the ring for the England job – but the RFU will have to wait until June to secure his services.

The former South Africa head coach is out of work following the World Cup, after leaving his position in charge of Italy. He intends to take an eight-month sabbatical from the game but has opened the door to taking the reins of England's off-course chariot in the future.

England-born Mallett, 54, said: "I've not spoken to anyone about international coaching positions. But I would consider each on their own merits if it happens."
