Wales full back Leigh Halfpenny has been voted the Six Nations player of the championship.

Halfpenny scored 74 points in the tournament, an effort that helped propel Wales to back to back titles.

The 24 year old received 40 per cent of the vote from 80,000 online votes cast, comfortably beating Italy flanker Alessandro Zanni who was second, with Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg third.

The full back, who scored 12 points in the 30-3 win over England in Cardiff was elated: "I can't thank the people who voted for me enough.

"It's a real honour and privilege, and I am overwhelmed to be among the players shortlisted.

"It's the icing on the cake of an exceptional year for Wales, and it is a privilege to be part of such an exceptional group of people.

"For my name to be added to the list of players who have won this award in the past is incredible and extremely humbling."
