The Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has apologised after he was arrested in Miami on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old was charged with "resisting an officer without violence" after police were called to his suite at the W South Beach Hotel due to a noise complaint, and with trespass after refusing to leave the premises.

A post on the official Twitter account of Miami Beach Police confirmed: "due to the multiple Australian media inquiries @BernardTomic was arrested on 7/15/2015 at the #WHotel".

Speaking about the incident to CBS4 News in Miami, Tomic - ranked 25th in the world - said: "It was definitely my fault.

"I was asleep on several occasions when they complained at first, but you know, it was just a noise complaint.

"I'm sorry for the police and the disturbance I caused. I'm just happy I got out and no one got hurt."

Tomic's arrest sheet, reproduced in Australia's Gold Coast Bulletin, reports that he at one point "closed the door on (hotel) security officers and refused to lower the noise and music".

Tomic said: "Yeah, because I told him that I wasn't playing the music too loud, and he was unhappy with the volume.

"So I asked him to come in and we negotiated the volume and he still wasn't happy when he came back the second time, and when he came back I was just disappointed to see police there.

"I said 'can I have a bit more time to collect my stuff?', and unfortunately they didn't give me enough time."
