Anne Keothavong advanced to the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career to cap a wonderful day for British tennis.

The Londoner beat Russia's Arina Rodionova 7-5 6-4 to join Elena Baltacha in getting over the first hurdle.

A first set containing five breaks of serve was edged by Keothavong and two further breaks in the second proved enough to see her go through to a meeting with 30th-seeded German Andrea Petkovic, who thrashed Jill Craybas 6-1 6-2.
