CoCo Vandeweghe admitted that she "let it rip" after her contest against Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the US Open, only she wasn't talking about her performance.

The American tennis player was referring to the frustration and anger she unleashed on her racket.

After losing the first five games of the first set, she ferociously smashed her racket into the ground four times whilst seated at the changeover.

Despite the frame being mangled, Vandeweghe wasn't finished.

She raised her arms to the booing crowd inside the Louis Armstrong Stadium and then walloped the racket on the court one more time.

"I definitely wasn’t doing it for the fun of it," said Vandeweghe. “I’m down 5-0. It was definitely a lot of nervous energy and pent-up frustration. I let it rip."

The defeat to her wildcard opponent meant Vandeweghe missed out on a match against world number one Serena Williams in the third round.
