Heather Watson has dropped to third in the British rankings as her poor run of form continued when she was knocked out in the first round of the Luxembourg Open by Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer yesterday.
Watson staged a brave recovery after losing the first set in just 24 minutes but world No 63 Wickmayer came through 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, in one hour and 42 minutes.
Watson’s defeat stretched her recent record to just one win in nine matches, a run which has resulted in her slumping out of the world’s top 100. She has now dropped to 133rd behind Laura Robson, who is No 46, and Johanna Konta, who is at 115.
