Kyle Edmund out of Winston-Salem Open after quarter-final defeat

The British number one was seeded third and would have had eyes on a first ATP Tour title, but was dispatched 6-1 6-2 by American Steve Johnson

Kyle Edmund's run at the Winston-Salem Open ended with a quarter-final loss to Steve Johnson.

The British number one was seeded third and would have had eyes on a first ATP Tour title, but was dispatched 6-1 6-2 by Steve Johnson, who last year was knocked out by Edmund at the same stage of the tournament.

This year, Edmund got off to a below-par start as home favourite Johnson got his revenge, racing to a 6-1 lead in the opening set.

The second set was similarly one-sided, with Johnson claiming an early double break and wrapping up the match in just over an hour.

Edmund will now turn his attentions to the US Open, where he will face Paolo Lorenzi in next week's first round at Flushing Meadows.

Nicolas Jarry, the 14th seed from Chile, also missed out on a semi-final place in North Carolina after Taro Daniel, of Japan, fought from a set down to prevail 4-6 6-2 6-1.

Daniel will now face American Daniil Medvedev, who overcame compatriot Ryan Harrison 7-6 (7/4) 6-4, while Pablo Carreno Busta, the Spanish second seed, will face of against Johnson after beating South Korean Hyeon Chung 6-3 6-4.
