The Cincinnati Bengals have matched their best ever start to the season as a 34-21 victory over the Buffalo Bills moved them to 6-0 atop the AFC North.

Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes as he went 22-of-33 for 243 yards. The Bills struck first but Cincinnati scored 17 points on their first three second-half possessions.

The Bills, depleted by injuries, hampered their own cause further with a string of penalties.

Peyton Manning's apparent decline continued as he was picked off three times - taking him to an NFL-high 10 for the season - but there were enough flashes of the old brilliance to help the Denver Broncos edge out the Cleveland Browns 26-23 in overtime.

Cleveland took the lead in the fourth quarter on a pick-six off Manning, but the veteran quarterback atoned as he threw a 75-yard touchdown pass on the next drive.

With the game on the line in overtime, he drove the Broncos downfield to set up Brandon McManus for a 34-yard field goal that moved his side to 6-0 in AFC West.

Calvin Johnson turned in a star performance but the Detroit Lions needed overtime to beat the Chicago Bears 37-34.

Johnson finished with six receptions for 166 yards and a touchdown, with the last of those catches a 57-yard pass from Matthew Stafford which put Matt Prater in position for the 27-yard field goal which settled the game.

Chicago had forced overtime with Robbie Gould's 29-yard field goal as time expired.

The unexpected figure of Landry Jones led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 25-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Jones threw two touchdowns passes to Martavis Bryant after replacing Michael Vick, digging the Steelers out of a hole. Vick, anointed starter in the absence of the injured Ben Roethlisberger, took a blow to the head early in the game, returned, but then had to leave in the third quarter with a hamstring problem.

Jones went 8-for-12 with 168 yards and two scores, while Carson Palmer threw for 421 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Arizona.

Dan Campbell's reign as interim coach of the Miami Dolphins began with a win as his team routed the Tennessee Titans 38-10.

The Miami defence dominated, intercepting Marcus Mariota twice before the rookie quarterback left the game with a knee injury, and recorded six sacks. Cameron Wake had four of them and added two forced fumbles.

Campbell has replaced Joe Philbin, who was fired on October 5 after three straight losses.

Philbin was fired immediately after a game at Wembley a fortnight ago, and Gus Bradley will head to London next week feeling the heat after his Jacksonville Jaguars lost a fourth straight game, beaten 31-20 by the Houston Texas for whom Bryan Hoyer threw three touchdown passes.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for two touchdowns and added another on the ground as the New York Jets beat the Washington Redskins 34-20, while the Minnesota Vikings did enough to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 16-10 in an error-strewn game.

The formidable Carolina Panthers were close to being beaten for the first time this term but Greg Olsen's touchdown from Cam Newton's 26-yard pass with 32 seconds left secured a 27-23 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

With the Seahawks failing to pick up Olsen's run to the end zone, Carolina could celebrate a fifth straight win, completing a fightback from 23-14 adrift in the fourth quarter.

Green Bay went one better with a sixth consecutive victory, the Packers 27-20 winners against the San Diego Chargers after Philip Rivers failed to find Danny Woodhead with a last-ditch attempted touchdown pass. Chargers quarterback Rivers otherwise had an outstanding day, passing for 503 yards.

The San Francisco 49ers halted a four-game losing run by overcoming Baltimore 25-20, with a touchdown for former Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith in their haul.

Nine months after the 'Deflategate' saga flared following the AFC championship game, the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts renewed their rivalry, and Tom Brady was irrepressible.

Patriots quarterback Brady passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns - for Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and LeGarrette Blount - in a 34-27 win for the visitors to Lucas Oil Stadium.

It was the first game between the teams since allegations surfaced that New England tampered with the pressure of a number of footballs before their crucially important clash in January which the Patriots won 45-7.

Brady was handed a four-game ban by the NFL for his alleged involvement that day, which was later dismissed by a federal court.
