A high school student will take the girlfriend of an NBA player to his prom after a tweet got more than 10,000 retweets on Twitter.

Jaime Guerra asked Nik Stauskas of the Sacremento Kings how many retweets it would take for him to have Taylor Anderson as his date.

Stauskas, in his first year as a professional, set the bar high at 10,000 before midnight Friday - but didn't count on it becoming a trending topic on the social media site.

The 10,000 target was reached in just two hours after the tweet caught the attention of fellow NBA players and NFL players.

After the target was reached Stauskas and Anderson were good sports and agreed to it - if Guerra did the 'promposal', an American tradition to make a spectacle of asking.

Here's how it played out last night...

Stauskas, 21, was picked No 8 overall in the 2014 Draft, he is averaging almost four points per game in 14 minutes.
