Birmingham City University student Anu Yusuf gets married and graduates on the same day

'It certainly worked well logistically,' says the law grad

A Birmingham City University (BCU) student has had a graduation day like no other - by getting married and picking up a first-class degree on the same day.

Anu Yusuf, 26, received her Law LLB alongside hundreds of fellow students while dressed in a traditional cap and gown. Just hours before, though, the Nigerian-born student had been dressed in all white as she tied the knot at Birmingham Register Office.

The wedding started on the morning of her graduation day and ended at 1pm. After a quick lunch, the now Mrs Ola quickly changed out of her dress and rushed back into the city centre for 2pm to collect her cap and gown before receiving her degree, according to the BCU site.

“It certainly worked well logistically,” she explained, “as it meant our relatives only had to travel once for both occasions. We both have family all over the UK and we were conscious of taking up too much of their time and for all the added expense in making the same journey twice.”

She added: “I’d be lying if I was say it wasn’t a relief to get to the end of the day, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. It was so special to have my family and friends present for, not one, but two of the most significant milestones in my life, and being able to share it with them all is something that I will treasure forever.”

As well as studying for her law degree, Mrs Ola has supported her studies with part-time work at the university, including a role most recently in the international office as a marketing assistant. She was even at work just two days before her wedding. Now, though, she now hopes to further her studies by taking on a PhD in law.
