History: Management education has taken place at Sheffield for 49 years, originally under the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies.

Address: Mappin Street, within the main campus of the University of Sheffield in the city centre.

Ambience: The school's building is adjacent to a large quad, so there's a pleasant, leafy atmosphere. High-quality residential accommodation is available with the university.

Vital statistics: The school employs more than 50 academic staff and has 63 students doing the MBA. A new part-time executive MBA programme (30 months) was launched in January 2009. The school also runs a popular pre-experience Masters programme.

Added value: The MBA has a particular focus on entrepreneurship, innovation and consulting and is strong in accounting, finance and human resource management. The school is a recognised by the Chartered Management Institute.

Easy to get into? The MBA requires a good undergraduate degree and at least three years' work experience. Similar standards are expected for entry to the Masters courses, although work experience is not necessary.

Glittering alumni: Sir Peter Middleton, chairman of Camelot; Stephen Sunnucks, president of Gap Europe; Penny Hughes, ex-president of Coca Cola GB and Ireland; Jennifer Gershon, European brand director, Mars.

Gurus: The school says "all staff can be considered gurus in their respective fields."

International connections: Good links with senior scholars at institutions all over the UK, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The school has an Erasmus exchange with Pecs University in Hungary, and validates programmes at City College in Thessaloniki, Greece. There is also a close working relationship with Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; Turku School of Economics & Business Administration, Finland; Rennes Business School, France; Vienna University of Economics & Business, Austria and EDHEC Business School, Lille-Nice, France.

Student profile: The average age of MBA students is 28; around a third are female. The average age of all postgraduate students is 24.

Cost: The MBA is £17,430 for non-EU students and £11,690 for EU students.

Return on investment: More than half of former students reported at least a 100 per cent increase in salary after the MBA, according to a survey.
