Heading home for Christmas is the perfect excuse to forget the stresses of city and uni life for many students

Christmas is only one week away and students all over the UK are coming to the end of the first semester. Although assignments are due and stress levels are possibly rocketing, Christmas excitement cannot be overlooked. So, if you’re a student and not looking forward to the holiday, here’s exactly why you should:

1) You no longer have to pay for your own food

Student budgeting is challenging at the best of times, and then throw food shopping into the mix. But, Christmas at home means only one thing: a full fridge. There is nothing more satisfying than opening that door and seeing a vast array of food you can’t afford to buy at university.

2) You can put the heating on and not feel too guilty about it

Living on your own comes with a great deal of responsibility, including the discipline to not have the heating on constantly, especially during the cold winter months. Alas, upon the return home for Christmas, the heating is already on and you had nothing to do with it. So, take off those extra pair of socks and soak it all in.

3) You are reunited with your car

One of the toughest things about moving away for university is the possibility of having to leave your car at home. There’s nothing more exciting than being reunited with your loyal machine. Yes, petrol may be expensive. However, no more public transport queues or waiting for the bus in the rain.

4) Christmas = time to get tipsy

Goodbye cheap paint stripper vodka and hello champagne. Christmas drinks deals are all over supermarkets and there is no Sainsbury’s own vodka in sight. You’re back in the land of the living and, fortunately enough, there’s the chance of a little classier selection of drinks to choose from at home.

5) Family pets

Saying goodbye to the family dog is a tough one, but the Christmas holidays signify a very special reunion. It’s easy to forget how much you really miss pets when you leave, but you remember exactly why it was so hard to say goodbye as soon as you’re reunited. Plus, it’s always amusing to put a Christmas hat on a grumpy cat.

6) A brand new Christmas jumper

No matter how old you are, there’s just something about getting Christmas jumpers. Whether it’s a traditional pudding, or a slightly more inventive design which you aren’t able to wear around your grandparents, it’s a given that, as soon as you have that Christmas jumper on, the festive feeling spreads like wildfire.

7) Childhood friends

You return to the place you’ve grown up along with your childhood friends. Christmas holidays give you that great opportunity to catch up with old friends and hear about their own university experiences from each corner of the UK. There’s something oddly satisfying about knowing your friends can’t budget either.

8) The next student loan instalment is within touching distance

The Christmas holidays also herald the arrival of a very dear friend - the student loan. After the festive excitement is all over, we can all look ahead to mid-January where we receive the next maintenance loan instalment. It’s comforting to know we’ll be returning to university with money. Well, briefly anyway.

Happy Holidays.
