Video: For those in the UK who were unable to witness the Aurora Borealis straying unusually south last week, this time-lapse from Norway should remedy any disappointment

Skywatchers in the UK spent last Friday night outdoors hoping to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis, which was uncharacteristically clear due to two huge solar flares bouncing off the earth’s atmosphere.

However, some were disappointed as the Northern Lights failed to reach some areas around the UK, despite predictions that they would make it as far south as Swansea in south Wales.

Still, the latest time-lapse footage from Norway should be enough the temper the frustration of even the most avid skywatcher.

The video shows the amazing waves of green light above Trondheim in Norway at around 1am on Saturday 13 September.

Towards the end of the clip, timelapse reveals the intense movement and vivid colours of the Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights or the The Aurora Borealis, as the lights are also known, are a spectacular display of multi-coloured solar waves and they usually can be seen in high latitude regions such as the Arctic and Antartic.

For those still upset about missing the Northern Lights and keen to witness the spectacular event, a Norwegian tourist board, Innovation Norway, recently announced a new mobile app that helps keen skywatchers to experience the phenomenon. The app informs users of their chance of witnessing the Northern Lights as providing local accommodation, maps, and travel information.
