OVERVIEW

As regal as its name would suggest, the five-star Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora is somewhere where reality meets expectations; prepare for your jowl descending to the ground upon arrival. Strolling in and around the resort, including along the prom, is a genuine joy. It's a resort within a non-resort.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Drive northwest along the TF-1 from Tenerife South Airport to reach the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora in 30 minutes. It takes over an hour to use the same motorway from Tenerife North Airport. Explore the Tenerife of banana plantations rather than the monkey business of the island's more raucous side. Ensure you visit the giant 800-metre-high rock formations at nearby Los Gigantes.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tenerife take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Tenerife South airport. Free parking. Book flights to Tenerife.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Pretty as the proverbial picture, this hotel is designed with a whole lot of love. There's a suspicion it was airlifted out of Andalucía, mimicking as it does Granada's famed Alhambra. Spanning 19 acres, there's a chilled atmosphere. Everything is spread out over five zones rather than concentrated in one.

THE FACILITIES

The service throughout the hotel is exemplary but it's even better in the RedLevel section, where there is a butler to attend to your needs around the clock. Facilities are very much targeted towards water babies. There are 7,500 square metres of swimming space including the Infinity Pool.

FOOD AND DRINK

Whatever your tastes, there's bound to be a restaurant to make your buds tingle at Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora with Japanese, Mexican and Spanish eateries. The all-inclusive package begins with a buffet breakfast at Food Market Pangea, followed by lunch and dinner at the other restaurants dotted around the resort.

La Terrasse: Canarian and international cuisine, fish, seafood.

Le Bistro Provencal: Mediterranean, light meals, salads, sandwiches.
