Think 19th-century grand hotel and you generally think of classic, tasteful elegance. And that's exactly what you find when the top-hatted commissionaire ushers you through the front door into the central reception area, with its polished dark wood, smart marble floors, and cabinets displaying jewellery and cut glass from upmarket stores.

Service is friendly and attentive, as befits a five-star, but doesn't feel overly formal or stuffy. As well as a small spa and fitness room, the hotel offers other services such as free broadband, valet parking and the option of a chauffeur-driven car. Some Chester shops also give discounts to hotel guests.
