The décor is, for the most part, English country house traditional, bordering on chintzy. Expect soft furnishings in safe cream, pastels and florals and corridors with landscape paintings. The spa, in a separate modern building, is a more contemporary space with marble and mother of pearl detail around the indoor pool.

The spa incorporates a large indoor pool and a smaller heated outdoor pool (open April to September) with a terrace and a bar serving drinks and snacks. You can get sporty in the gym or on the tennis courts, croquet lawn, putting or bowling greens or six-hole golf course. Though we'd done little but relax, good service in the restaurant coaxed us to indulge.
