Sitting right on Main St in the village of Letcombe Regis, the Greyhound is well placed for walking in the nearby countryside. There are lovely walks along Letcombe Brook to neighbouring Letcombe Basset, and there's even a track that leads right into the much larger town of Wantage, just two kilometres away. You're right next to the Ridgeway National Trail here, so get your hiking boots on and hit the hills for brilliant views of South Oxfordshire.

By car: around 1 hour 15 minutes from Bristol, 1 hour 50 minutes from London and 3 hours 40 minutes from Manchester. Free parking on site.

By train: there are direct trains to Didcot Parkway from London Paddington (1 hour 20 minutes). The hotel is a 20-minute drive from the train station. Book trains to Didcot Parkway.

It's all about home comforts and original architecture here. The bar and restaurant is all exposed wooden beams and handsome pillars, while the bedrooms have simple but style-conscious furnishings. A few bold cushions and fabric headboards offer a burst of colour in an otherwise neutral space, making the whole place feel warm, welcoming and pleasingly unstuffy.

Despite a busy restaurant, and only a few members of staff at the bar, service during our stay was seamless, with plenty of smiles and excellent wine recommendations over dinner. The hotel has very few facilities beyond its bedrooms and restaurant, but you don't need much else when you've got South Oxfordshire's glorious scenery outside.

Bedrooms here feel much more like a friend's guestroom than a fancy hotel, as there's plenty of pine furniture and the odd colourful throw cushion. Some rooms have bathtubs while others have showers, and the fragrant Bramley toiletries are a welcome luxury.

Room types: Segsbury, Ridgeway, Childrey, Uffington, Bassett, Lambourn, Oxford, Wantage

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with Bramley toiletries, handmade pocket sprung matresses, Roberts DAB/FM radio, homemade biscuits, tea and coffee-making facilities

The menu here goes well beyond the pub classics and includes dishes like Cornish skate wing with polenta and roasted aubergine. There are, of course, the usual suspects like burgers, steaks and fish and chips, but the real highlight is the inventive pairings on the main dishes menu. Expect lovely charred spring onions, pickled blackberries and samphire to feature.

Restaurant: locally-sourced ingredients, refined gastro-pub fare. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £16.
