Close to Derby and just 20 minutes south of the Peak District National Park, this 18th-century farmhouse turned roadside inn was given a top-to-toe makeover in 2015, emerging with ten attractive country-chic bedrooms, a large bar furnished in modishly mismatched style and a restaurant with a good reputation for its modern pub grub.

Although surrounded by farmland, the hotel is on the busy main road between Derby (three miles south) and Ashbourne (ten miles north), so there's no avoiding the traffic noise. On the upside, though, there's a bus stop right by the hotel gate, with an hourly service to Derby city centre. Fifteen minutes' drive away is the National Trust site of Kedleston Hall, a fine 18th-century mansion set in extensive parkland.

By car: around 1 hour from Birmingham and Sheffield, 2 hours 30 minutes from Bristol and 3 hours from London. There is free parking on site.

By train: By train: direct trains run to Derby from Sheffield Station (30 minutes), Birmingham New Street (45 minutes) and London St Pancras (1 hour 20 minutes). The hotel is around a 10-minute taxi ride from Derby Station. Book trains to Derby.

The eclectic décor in the laidback bar/restaurant mixes old and new, rustic and urban. There are glossy tiles and weathered woods, velvet armchairs and boldly coloured leather banquettes. There are plenty of talking points, too, from the books hanging from the library ceiling to the steampunk-ish lighting features created from copper piping and bare bulbs.

A couple of the bar rooms can be closed off for private events. There's also a separate wing, The Folly, that's licensed to hold weddings and civil ceremonies, and comes with its own garden area and firepit. Other than that, you won't find much by way of facilities but the service is friendly and helpful.

The kitchen is proud of its Josper charcoal oven used to chargrill steaks, and the stone-baked sourdough pizzas are the stuff of local legend. There's a mixture of classic-meets-contemporary pub grub, from beef burgers and chicken kievs to spiced carrot bhajis and Thai-style mussels.

Restaurant: hearty gastropub food. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner mains from £9.95.

Bar: cocktails, artisan spirits, craft beers. Open daily 7am-10pm.
