OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

To the north of the city centre, in the quiet residential neighbourhood of San Gallo, the guesthouse is a 15-minute walk from the Duomo and the railway station. Most of the major sights require a good walk (the Uffizi, for example, is 30 minutes), but the surroundings are quiet and well away from tourist hordes. The big plus of staying here is that it's less than ten minutes to the Accademia, with its collection of Michelangelo sculptures, and the Museo di San Marco with its sublime paintings by Fra' Angelico.

By plane: there are direct flights to Florence Airport from London (2 hours 5 mins), Manchester (4 hours 25 mins), Edinburgh (4 hours 55 mins). The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. Book flights to Florence.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Spread over the top two floors of a 19th-century residenza - accessed by a minuscule lift - bedrooms lead off the hall reception on the third floor with a sitting room and breakfast room on the floor above. With brightly coloured walls and furnishings, tiled and parquet floors, books and artwork, the place exudes warmth and homeliness.

THE FACILITIES

The sitting room on the fourth floor is cosy with sunny-yellow walls, stripey chairs and a pretty sofa. There are books to borrow plus an honesty bar and complimentary hot drinks and cakes are laid out in the adjoining breakfast room. Stone steps lead up to the roof terrace with stunning views of the city's landmarks. The friendly staff will help plan trips and can recommend local eating places.
