OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

During the day, the Grand House Hotel's main road is busy as it runs alongside the town's pretty and popular marina. However, it is relatively quiet at night and this urban location means great access to amenities such as cafés and boutique shops. The hotel is less than one kilometre from its private beach restaurant and it's only a further kilometre to a vast golden sand beach where the hotel has a concession stand.

By plane: flights to Faro take around 3 hours from London and Manchester and 2 hours 30 mins from Bristol. The drive to the hotel takes 45 minutes. Private parking costs €10 per day. Book flights to Faro.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The Grand House Hotel is a Relais & Châteaux property and rightly so. Its colonial décor fits with the timeframe of the creation of the town and exudes sophistication, but also boasts a relaxed feel reflecting the eastern part of the Algarve. The first floor is full of 19th-century details: a sumptuous dining room, bijou bar with the original dark wood features, biblioteca (library) and an additional public room, both for relaxing.

THE FACILITIES

When Ricardo, the hotel driver, volunteers to take you on a personal tour of the area (where he grew up), that is certainly beyond the call of duty. Staff could not do enough for guests and that includes everyone from waiters and waitresses to maids, bartenders and also receptionists. It was as if staying in someone's home rather than a hotel.

BED AND BATH

We stayed in a first-floor, open plan suite featuring high ceilings, a large chandelier and lush, heavy draperies. The main bedroom featured framed portraits of 18th-century dignitaries over the bed and was decorated with French regency furniture. The small connecting room had a comfortable sitting area and a cleverly designed bathroom with a shower sharing its glass wall with the sitting area.

Room types: Small, Medium, Grand, Grand Deluxe Junior, Grand House suites

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, hairdryer, TV, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The breakfast at the hotel is superb, offering healthy and cooked options, juices, smoothies and coffee. Guests can opt instead for brunch or lunch at the nearby waterside Grand Beach Club Restaurant, where dishes served use local Portuguese ingredients plus fresh seafood; just outside is an infinity pool plus a sandy beach for relaxing. For those who prefer to stay at the hotel for dinner, they can choose a three or five-course meal which is also made from excellent local ingredients.

Grand Salon: Portuguese cuisine, locally-sourced ingredients. Open daily for dinner.

Grand Beach Club: comfort food with a Portguese twist. Open daily 10am-5pm.
