OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Embrace the glamour in glitzy Meloneras. Hotel Riu Palace Meloneras is within ten minutes of Maspalomas' distinctive dunes on foot. Travelling in a hire car from the airport will take you around 25 minutes. Situated at the livelier end of the row of hotels, you're in the place to be. Visit nearby restaurant Bandera Tapas y Copas and mop up the garlicky olive oil with bread after devouring their tomates aliñados.

By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Gran Canaria take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 25-minute taxi ride from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Gran Canaria.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Sophistication is what sets this hotel apart. They make you feel like a member of a royal family for the duration of your stay. It's a trick they pull off with a lobby where sparkly chandeliers and a full-sized ornamental horse combination truly dazzle.

THE FACILITIES

The hotel checks guests in rather than guests checking themselves in, a subtle difference that allows you to enjoy the complimentary cava rather than fussing about forms. There's plenty of swimming space to go around, with five main pools and shaded gardens ensure you escape the heat if that's your plan.

FOOD AND DRINK

Despite the strange addition of broccoli to the make-your-own-English breakfast section of the buffet, the main Magnolia restaurant is exemplary in its offerings, particularly in the cheese and cold cuts section. If you fancy á-la-carte dinner, you can book at the Spanish Español or fusion Krystal at no extra charge.

Main restaurant: buffet meals. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Krystal: fusion restaurant, tapas. Open for dinner.

Espanol: traditional Spanish restaurant. Open for dinner.
