Situated almost slap bang between the airport and the capital, Hotel Las Olas ensures you cut down on your travel while on holiday. A shuttle bus service runs between Santa Cruz de La Palma and the hotel and the nearest beach is the C-shaped black-sand Playa de Los Cancajos, a brisk ten-minute walk away. Octopus and assorted fruits of the sea have been served at the chiringuito, Bar Restaurante El Pulpo, for over 50 years.

By plane: flights from London take around 9 hours with a stop in Barcelona; flights from Birmingham take around 11 hours with a stop in Tenerife. The hotel is a 2-minute drive from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to La Palma.

Somebody opened a box of coloured chalk in a board meeting prior to the construction of this aparthotel, which would explain the pastel pink of the reception and the varying shades of the apartment blocks. A jaunty maritime logo reminds visitors in any doubt of the hotel's Canary Islands location.

Staff move quicker than guests, and the result is an eternally spotless complex and a can-do approach, utilized when dealing with holidaymakers' enquiries. There are two interconnecting main pools, one of which is heated. You will find pool, table football, and table tennis tables poolside. There's also a gym.

The view is better than the breakfasts and dinner at a same-y buffet. It's not all self-serve in the morning with eggs cooked to order. At night, there is more of a gateway to traditional Canarian cuisine. The pool bar serves the usual snacks and an á-la-carte restaurant, Thai cuisine.

Buffet restaurant: Canarian specialities and international cuisine.

Restaurante Thai La Ola: traditional Thai cuisine.

Pool bar: drinks and snacks.
