There is a growing trend for visitors to book long weekends in the Canary Islands, although week-long beach holidays retain their popularity. The three-star Hotel El Galeón is a suitable option if you favour comfort over style. It's in unshowy Santa Cruz de La Palma, a little off the main drag.

South-central Hotel El Galeón is under ten minutes from La Palma Airport by hire car, driving along the LP-5 and LP-2. You can reach the centre and beach in around a quarter of an hour but your return will be longer as you will be walking uphill rather than downhill. Hope for it to be lapa (limpet) season at the marina's El Rincón de Carol, although there are other all-year-round seafood specialities available.

By plane: flights from London take around 9 hours with a stop in Barcelona; flights from Birmingham take around 11 hours with a stop in Tenerife. The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the airport. Book flights to La Palma.

A terracotta red exterior makes the hotel easy to spot from a distance. The Hotel El Galeón was built to accommodate the kink in Carretera El Galéon it occupies, curling with the road. The ambience is oh-so-quiet although the modern art in the reception elicits plenty of wows.

The reception staff are friendly but not always available. There is no 24-hour-service available with the lobby closed at certain times. When a member of reception is away, it's not uncommon for no one to answer the replacement phone. A car park gives direct access to rooms and is fitted with CCTV.

The generously-proportioned rooms include standard and double apartments. The colour scheme is predominantly orange, with the walls painted naranja and towels of the same hue in the bathroom. There is a comfy lounge, a fully-equipped kitchen and body-long mirrors. Every room has a balcony with an ocean or mountain view.

Room types: Standard Apartment, Double Apartment

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, lounge, balcony, TV, hairdryer, free Wi-Fi

The breakfast room is situated off the reception. Here, the buffet selection is basic but fresh, especially when it comes to the fruit selection. Take your pick of one of the many quality eateries nearby or DIY regarding your lunch and/or dinner by shopping at the market or supermarkets.

Buffet breakfast: continental and hot dishes, fresh seasonal fruit.
