Wild isle

Bruny Island is on the wild side of Australia, just south of Tasmania's capital, with fascinating wildlife and the country's southernmost vineyard. A new three-day "Long Weekend" tour costs A$1,480 (£925), with transfers from Hobart, hotels, activities, food and wine (bit.ly/Bruny72).

San Diego's Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa has just come to the end of a $30m transformation, which includes the opening of a restaurant, resplendent with an original Damien Hirst butterfly artwork and 49 refurbished Mediterranean-style guest casitas (ranchovalencia.com).

Capital gains
