What makes a great beach? Well, the lack of road access is a big part of it. Not that you’ve far to walk from the road to Druidstone, tucked away in St Brides Bay between Newgale and Broad Haven, but the 10-minute trek down the path keeps numbers down.

At low tide it’s a vast, long strand of fine sand, with rock pools full of crabs, a waterfall, spectacular rock formations and big caves to take refuge from the elements, and room for limitless games of football, cricket and volleyball. The only drawback is the rather too frequent horse treks along the surf, but nothing in life is perfect. And dogs are allowed.

Just make sure you’re aware of the tide times so you not only have plenty of beach to play on but you also don’t get cut off when the water comes in. Bring a picnic or head up to the restaurant of the lovely Druidstone Hotel, on the clifftop above, reached by its own private path – which is not only a brilliant place to eat but a very special place to stay too, with a fabulous setting.
