Q. Can I leave my baggage at Venice's Marco Polo airport for the day - and how can I get from the airport to the city itself? What is the best option: water bus, train, or local bus?

John French

A. First, at the airport just look out for signs marked 'deposito bagagli'. The left-luggage office is in the arrivals hall, near the post office. The storage service is available daily from 5am to 9pm at a cost of €6 per piece of luggage for each 24 hour period.

Next, the most exciting way to reach the city is by water bus. The Alilaguna service serves three routes from the airport, and for €15 (or €14 if you book online at alilaguna.it) you can make a grand entrance to the city.

Returning to the airport, sample the causeway that runs from Venice across to the mainland. Non-stop ATVO buses run every half-hour from the Piazzale Roma close to Santa Lucia railway station (atvo.it for times). The fare is €6, and you must buy the ticket in advance from either the ATVO ticket office or one of the machines.
