'He's irreplaceable' Marine pays tribute to Prince Philip

A former officer in the royal marines, who was led by Prince Philip, appeared outside Windsor Castle on Friday afternoon to pay his respects to the Duke of Edinburgh, who was once the force’s captain general.

Gary Smith laid a flag on the ground before speaking to The Independent. He called the prince a “fantastic leader” and said the royal had left “a massive void to fill”. “He had a great sense of humour and banter with the guys,” Mr Smith said.

“He served with absolute distinction, so we’re all devastated following the news of his passing.”
